Planning rules for painting a house in Nottingham
Painting your house does not need planning permission: the Planning Portal counts it among the repairs, maintenance and minor improvements you can carry out without applying. A listed building is different. The Planning Portal says a listed building needs listed building consent for any significant works, inside or out, and Nottingham City Council says consent is needed for most building work to a listed building, internal and external.
In a conservation area, the Planning Portal says cladding the outside of a house with stone, artificial stone, pebble dash, render, timber, plastic or tiles needs planning permission first.
Some Nottingham properties, mostly in conservation areas, are also covered by Article 4 Directions, which remove the right to carry out certain types of permitted development. The council lists them in Devonshire Promenade, Foxhall Road, Sneinton, Strelley Village, Waterloo Promenade and Wellington Terrace, where they restrict minor work such as small extensions, outbuildings and changes to windows and doors. The council’s My Property map shows whether a home is listed or in a conservation area, and its Minor Works Enquiry Service can say what applies before work starts.
